Butler Student Handbook

This serves as the only official student handbook for Butler University and applies to all Butler students regardless of college, enrollment status, degree/non-degree program or learning option. This includes undergraduate, graduate, online, commuter, international, and guest students. It contains current University policies and resources governed by the applicable University office, department or division for which they have authority.

Welcome to Butler University!

Whether you are joining us for the first time or returning for another year, I am delighted to welcome you to our Bulldog community. Butler is a place where you are encouraged to learn, grow, lead, and discover the best version of yourself. Each of you brings unique experiences, perspectives, talents, and aspirations that enrich our campus, and your voice matters here. You belong at Butler, and we are grateful to be part of your journey.

As you begin this academic year, I encourage you to think of the Student Handbook as more than a collection of policies. It is your guide to navigating campus life and the official resource outlining the rights, responsibilities, and expectations that help us build a community where every student can thrive.

At Butler, we are committed to fostering an environment rooted in respect, integrity, accountability, and care for one another. Being a member of this community means embracing both the opportunities and the responsibilities that come with being a Bulldog. The policies outlined in this handbook are designed not to limit your experience, but to protect your rights, promote fairness, support your well-being, and ensure that every member of our community has the opportunity to learn and succeed.

You will also find information about the many resources available to support your academic success and personal well-being—from academic advising and career development to health and wellness services, student organizations, leadership opportunities, and campus traditions. I encourage you to get involved, build meaningful relationships, seek out new experiences, and find your place and your people. Some of your most memorable moments at Butler will happen both inside and outside the classroom.

Please take time to familiarize yourself with this handbook and return to it whenever you have questions about University policies, available resources, or your rights and responsibilities as a student. Understanding these expectations is an important part of being an engaged and responsible member of our community.

Most importantly, remember that you are not expected to navigate your Butler journey alone. Our faculty, staff, and student leaders are here to support, encourage, and challenge you every step of the way. We are invested in your success and honored to be part of the experiences that will shape who you become.
